The High Court in Accra has placed an injunction on the planned installation of Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, as leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission, pending the outcome of a legal challenge brought by two senior members of the church.
The suit was filed on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at the General Jurisdiction Registry of the High Court by Kweku Agyenim Boateng of Agogo in Kumasi and Seth Appiah Richard Brown. Boateng previously served as Deputy General Secretary of the Kristo Asafo Mission.
According to court documents, the plaintiffs contend that while Israel Kwadwo Safo had at one point been designated as a successor by the founder, amendments made to the church’s constitution in 2024 altered the line of succession and rendered him ineligible to assume the leadership.They argue the 2024 constitutional amendment represented the “final and deliberate wishes” of Apostle Kwadwo Safo regarding the future leadership of the church.
The plaintiffs are asking the court to declare that the 2017 Constitution of the Kristo Asafo Mission and its amended 2024 version remain the supreme laws regulating the affairs of the church, and that succession must be conducted strictly in accordance with those provisions. They are further asking the court to declare that Israel Kwadwo Safo is not qualified to be appointed, installed, presented or recognised as leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana.
The suit names the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, Israel Kwadwo Safo, Festus Owusu Badu, Dr. Kwadwo Addo Oduro and Robert Ntiful as defendants.
The action is accompanied by a Penal Notice cautioning the defendants, the Council of Elders, and any persons acting on their behalf against appointing, installing, presenting, recognising or holding out Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena as leader of the church while the case remains before the court. The court has warned that anyone who defies the order could face contempt proceedings.
The legal action follows the death of Apostle Kwadwo Safo in September 2025, which triggered succession discussions within the church.
